How will they remember you?
I have a friend who always paints her nails red. I can't say I remember her not wearing red 🤔 It's become her thing. When I think of her, among other things, I think of her signature red nails. Or sometimes red nails remind me of her...
Tons of people wear red nail polish, it's pretty common. But for her, it's special. She's worn it forever, whether everyone else is doing it too or whether nudes or neons are the current trend.
When I consider this as it pertains to branding, what pops to mind is this question that always bugged me when I first learned strategy: "How are you better than your competition?" Both myself and my clients often found it hard to answer. The word "better" felt a bit heavy at times. So, I started asking, "How are you different?" That helped... but lately I'm revisiting even that.
I've been thinking more about having a point of distinction rather than a point of differentiation. Meaning, how are you remembered more so than how are you different?
Like my friend and her red nails... it's not about being wildly different from everyone else, it's about being true to herself. She's consistent with her red, and I love that about her. It's her thing.
Instead of just being different for the sake of it, it's about getting to the core of what you believe in and owning it.
We want to find your position in the market, but it's not about creating something so niched and specific just to say no one else is doing that. It's about finding what you truly stand for and sharing your own point of view in a way that your audience aligns with.
So, no, it's not just about being different, it's about being distinctly memorable. And once you figure out what sets you apart, own it, and let the world know. That's how you get known for your true uniqueness.
Can you list 3-5 beliefs that highlight your distinct point of view? If not, let's have a chat!
